Loro Piana, Studies. Chapter I: On the Plaid

The plaid does not belong to function alone. More than a simple blanket, it is an object thatshapes an idea of domestic comfort, while also contributing to atmosphere and intimacy within aspace. It is from this perspective that Loro Piana launches Studies, its new series devoted tointerior design for Milano Design Week 2026, choosing the plaid as itsfirst subject of inquiry.

Installed at Cortile della Seta, the maison’s Milan headquarters, the project brings togethertwenty-four plaids presented as individual studies. The exhibition approaches the plaid not as anaccessory, but as an object through which Loro Piana’s textile language can be read. Since themid-1980s, after all, the plaid has been one of Loro Piana’s earliestfinished products and one ofthe objects through which the house developed its textile research.

The project is organised as a series of individual studies. Alongside thefinished pieces, fibres andyarns are also brought into view, allowing the plaid to be read not only as an end result but as aprocess. Different techniques, textures and patterns show how a single object can become a siteof experimentation, while also tracing a broader idea of making. Rather than turning the plaid into a symbol of luxury, ‘Studies. Chapter I’ uses it as a way ofreading Loro Piana’s material language. Through technique and construction, the plaid shifts fromeveryday object to a condensed expression of a precise textile culture.
